Two‐dimensional transient simulations are presented of the transport phenomena and multispecies, multireaction chemistry in chemical vapor deposition (CVD). The transient simulations are run until steady state, such that the steady state can be validated against the steady state solutions from literature. We compare various time integration methods in terms of efficiency and robustness. Besides stability, which is important due to the stiffness of the problem, preservation of non‐negativity is crucial. It appears that this latter condition on a time integration method is much more restrictive toward the time step size than stability. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Summary. We derive a set of asymptotically exact coupled amplitude-streaming flow ({CASF}) equations governing the evolution of weakly nonlinear nearly inviscid multimode Faraday waves and the associated
streaming flow in finite geometries. The streaming flow is found to play a particularly important role near mode interactions.
Such interactions come about either through a suitable choice of parameters or through breaking of degeneracy among modes
related by symmetry. An example of the first case is provided by the interaction of two nonaxisymmetric modes in a circular
container with different azimuthal wavenumbers. The second case arises when the shape of the container is changed from square
to slightly rectangular, or from circular to slightly noncircular but with a plane of symmetry. The generation of streaming
flow in each of these cases is discussed in detail and the properties of the resulting CASF equations are described. A preliminary
analysis suggests that these equations can resolve discrepancies between existing theory and experimental results in the first

In this paper, we consider an adaptive meshing scheme for solution of the steady incompressible Navier–Stokes equations by finite element discretization. The mesh refinement and optimization are performed based on an algorithm that combines the so‐called conforming centroidal Voronoi Delaunay triangulations (CfCVDTs) and residual‐type local a posteriori error estimators. Numerical experiments in the two‐dimensional space for various examples are presented with quadratic finite elements used for the velocity field and linear finite elements for the pressure. The results show that our meshing scheme can equally distribute the errors over all elements in some optimal way and keep the triangles very well shaped as well at all levels of refinement. In addition, the convergence rates achieved are close to the best obtainable. Extension of this approach to three‐dimensional cases is also discussed and the main challenge is the efficient implementation of three‐dimensional CfCVDT generation that is still under development. We propose a new general definition of Volterra operators. Several types of evolutionary operators, including Volterra ones in the sense of A.N. Tikhonov, satisfy this definition. For equations with generalized Volterra operators we introduce the notions of local, global, and maximally extended solutions. For solutions to nonlinear equations we formulate the existence, uniqueness, and extendability conditions. The theorems proved in this paper imply both known and new results on the solvability of concrete equations.
